This is an interesting topic... "getting into the school of my choice."

When I was applying to school I really wanted to get into A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. I didn't think that I would want to go anywhere else. KCOM had everything I thought I wanted in a school. They had a long history, quality teachers, and 3rd/4th year rotations right where I was already living.

Long story short. I got into ATSU-KCOM, LECOM, WVSOM, and LMU-DCOM. Before I went out to interview I thout KCOM was the only school for me. I wouldn't worry about "getting into the school of your choice" before you actually get into school. Worry about making yourself a quality applicant for an osteopathic school. I had no idea that I would want to move out to Harrogate, TN, but here I am. I chose LMU-DCOM over the school that I thought was my #1 choice!

If you make yourself a good applicant then you can get some interviews. Go out to a few schools. See what you get, and then choose from there. You never know what school you want to go to until you've seen a few.

Make sure you know a lot about osteopathic medicine. Shadow DOs. Not just one DO, but several. Get good letters. The more experience you have with osteopathic medicine and interaction with osteopathic physicians the better.

If you live near the school get out there and take a tour, let them know that you are really interested. Meet with people there, and get your name out. People get places for two reasons: 1) they earned it and 2) they know people. Get to know someone. Don't be insincere about your interaction with people, but make sure you make contact with someone.

First I would take a good look at all your options. If your #1 choice is an osteopathic school, then don't apply to any MD programs. Somehow let the school know that you only are applying to DO schools... I wouldn't go out and say straight up that they are your #1 choice, but somehow work into your personal statement how you have researched everything, you really have a strong desire to be a DO, and therefore you have only applied to osteopathic programs. You figure out how you want to say it, but I would think that schools would take into account your desire to be an osteopathic physician, not just a doctor.
