Hey all,

I wanted to get some conversation flowing about D.O. either currently applying to HPSP, actively serving out their 8 years, and those who decided to stay in after their commitment was completed.  I myself am applying now and am trying to figure out wich branch is the best fit for me, so to get this thread started, if anyone has any opinions on what makes one branch better than the other I would love to hear about it

I am currently a part of the Air Force HPSP. I chose to only apply for the AF HPSP for many reasons.
First, my family has been Air Force in the past.
Second, I worked with many physicians that had been in the military. The Navy doc said he'd choose the Airf Force, the Army doc said he'd do the Air Force, and the Air Force doc said he'd do the Air Force. 3 for 3 agreed that the Air Force was the best.
Finally, the quality of the bases and facilities that I have seen in the Air Force seem to be far better than the other branches. That is just a personal opinion that I have.

Hello all,

I am a PCOM class of 2003 graduate who went into army through HPSP. I graduated medical school and went on active duty as a resident in family medicine in 2003. I completed my residency through the army and deployed in 2006. I spent 15 months in Iraq then came home to serve my remainder of the time in the US. In sep 2010 I completed my obligation and now work for the army as DOD civilian. all military training in medicine is excellent all branches.

Army

pros: Combined Internship/residency once started wars won't stop, Most Military training opportunities

Cons: longest and most frequent deployments, few civilian deferments for residencies

Navy

Pro: Near water, deployments 7 months max, some civilian deferments

con: few combined Internship/ residencies most do one year internship then do obligation tour 2-4 yrs then residency.

Air force:

Pro: best lifestyle, shortest deployments 4 months, some civilian deferments

con few combined Internship/ residencies most do one year internship then do obligation tour 2-4 yrs then residency but not as frequent as Navy.
